Building Essential Skills Through Family Games: A Guide to Fun and Learning

Updated: Jan 28

In a world filled with screens and gadgets vying for our attention, the simple joy of playing games together as a family is a tradition worth preserving. Not only do family game nights create lasting memories and strengthen bonds, but they also offer a fun and interactive way to develop the essential skills that children need to succeed as learners.

Quality Time

Memory Skills

Board games and card games are fantastic tools for enhancing memory skills in children. Games that require players to remember specific sequences, patterns, or details not only exercise memory but also improve the ability to retain information over time. Classics to try with young children include Kim's game and Memory Pairs. To boost verbal memory, chain games where a list of items gets ever longer can be good. The classic British version is "Grandma went to market and she bought..." Each player takes it in turn to add one item to recite the existing list of items and then add one of their own. In my family, we like to play "I have a donought." Each player adds one word to the donut description until it becomes ridiculous. E.g., "I have a pink, sparkly, chocolate orange flavoured, strawberry filled dount with blue sprinkes and green icing and a cherry on top!"

Attention and Focus

Playing games as a family encourages children to concentrate, focus, and pay attention to details. Whether it's strategically planning moves in a board game or waiting for the perfect moment to play a card, games promote the kind of focused attention that is crucial for learning success. Speed games are great for this, Dobble and HalliGalli (a favourite of preschool kids in Germany!)

Vocabulary and Spatial Awareness

Many family games involve words, spatial arrangements, and strategic thinking. These games can help expand your child's vocabulary, enhance their spatial awareness skills, and foster critical thinking abilities that are invaluable in academic settings. Scrabble, or Bananagrams are great for using strategy to build words. Other classics like Pictionary and Taboo are great vocabulary builders. For some non-word-based tile-laying strategy, try Quirkle or Azul.

Fast Math and Spelling

From quick calculations in board games to word formation in word games, family games provide an enjoyable way to practice fast math skills and spelling. Encouraging children to do mental math or spell words correctly while having fun can significantly boost their academic performance. Orchard games make the super fun Magic Maths, for 5-7 year olds, where the heat from your hands reveals the answers to the math equations by magic! Boggle and variations on Hangman are classics for spelling and vocabulary.

Creativity and Patience

Board games often require creativity to come up with unique strategies or solutions to challenges. I love the game Pictures for this! It's one of my all-time favourite family games!

Additionally, learning to take turns, practice patience, and handle wins and losses gracefully are essential life skills that can develop through engaging in family games together. The challenge level here can go from simple (e.g. waiting to take your turn for young learners) to etremely challenging (surviving a multi-genrational, multi-hour game of Risk for example!)

As you explore the world of family games, consider incorporating a variety of games that target different skill sets to provide a well-rounded learning experience for your child. Remember, the goal is not just to win but to enjoy quality time together while nurturing valuable study skills and learning abilities.
